The day the hermit crab went naked

In the name of full disclosure, I must admit we had a wee bit of trouble with the hermit crabs too. Okay, I know. How hard could it be to make a crab happy? Some sand, plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, an assortment of shells in case the crawlers had a yen to upgrade. We had it all. Then Speedy decided to let it all hang out. How exciting! He’s going to move into one of the spiffy new shell models! One day passed and we figured Speedy was having commitment problems. Two days and we decided he was a stubborn, one could say, crabby crab. Day three and I chalked him up for an exhibitionist. I moved him right next to a spiffy shell, practically shoved his alien looking tushy into that thing. No dice. Speedy held out. He took his principles to that great sandy beach in the sky. What is it about pets around here? Got a pet story to share? Post a comment and you’ll be entered in the June contest to win a Starbuck’s card and signed book.

We have 4 gerbils at our house – Speedy, Flyer, Blacky and Tumbleweed. When we first got them we had trouble latching the cages closed properly, which led to a number of “jail breaks”. While the cage is in the basement, it seems our four friends can climb the stairs much to our surprise … one time we discovered their escape attempt by hearing rattling in the oven. When we went and pulled open the drawer below the oven, 2 little (dusty) heads popped up and looked up at us startled ! We almost had to give one away the time Blacky made it to the office and chewed through some computer cables, my husband was so not amused !

Poor Speedy. Knowing his end was near, he left his shell to the next little hermit needing a new dwelling. My pet story has to do with a parakeet I had as a pre-teen. One day, he/she/it got out of the cage and was flying around my bedroom. In a panic, I yelled for my mother to come and help me. When the bird landed on the curtain rod, she reached up and grabbed it. She came away with a handful of tail feathers. I cried so hard….she hurt my bird! I don’t remember if the tail grew back before he died a short time later.

    • Oh dear, Karen! Your mom must have felt the way I did after the great fish die off. My big girl has a parakeet and he is the funniest thing. He likes to sit with his head inside his little bell!
