Why My Neighbors Think I’m Crazy

Maybe it was the 400 pipe cleaners. Or it could have been the drinking straws that did it. Yes, spring is here and that means my neighbors get to see the crazy Mentink woman in action. We Californians spend a lot of time outdoors. To that end, we built a lovely porch cover made of nifty SUV filtering material that lets in the sun but provides a comfortable amount of shade. Genius! There is one little glitch, however. After every good storm the water collects in the nifty tubes in the earlier mentioned material. The water percolates there long enough to produce an excellent crop of neon green algae. Our first effort to fix this involved drilling tiny holes to allow for drainage. I believe I actually heard the algae laughing at our feeble efforts. We also tried putting zillions of drinking straws in the individual channels to help with drainage. The neighbors found this amusing. I found it useless so we settled on another method: shoving pipe cleaners into the wee little openings to wick out the water. The algae was vanquished but we discovered that  leaving the pipe cleaners in too long leads to the little wiry thing in the middle rusting which, in turn, creates staining. Hence, the pipe cleaners must be applied repeatedly after every storm. This provides extended entertainment for the people who live behind us. I am glad to be of service to the community in this way. What about you? Are you a source of entertainment to your neighborhood?

  1. No we don’t really have close neighbors to our house.
