Under the Golden Gate…

There we were just driving along, admiring the view of the indcredible San Francisco Bay, when the fog rolled away, the clouds parted, and we got stuck behind a park ranger vehicle. I had three seconds to snap this picture of the massive USS Iowa being towed under the Golden Gate on her way to L.A. where she’ll be restored and readied for visitors. Incredible to think that this battleship saw almost six decade of service. I read that she is even equipped with a special bathtub installed for President Roosevelt to use on his way across the Atlantic to the historic meeting with Stalin and Churchill.

Do any of you have a connection to the Iowa or memories of loved ones who served their country proudly? I was touched to see the crowd which gathered along the cliff to wave flags and send her on her way.

  1. I really like that photograph! What an opportunity to catch such a mighty ship at the moment it passed the Golden Gate…

My dad served with the British during WWII. Sadly, I know very little about his service – he never really wanted to talk about it, and he is gone now. My 86 year old mother just visited us for our daughter’s college graduation, and I asked her to sign release forms to obtain his service records from the British military. I can’t wait to learn about him!
