She’s a grand old flag!

Ah yes! That wonderful Fourth of July celebration is right around the corner, isn’t it? We Mentinks have a mega barbecue complete with friends, neighbors and all the cholesterol generating food one can pack down. This year it’s burgers and polish sausages. Things will be a bit different on this fourth as our city is no longer hosting a fireworks display. At the risk of being a grumpy gus, I’m in favor of this. The bash costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 mostly due to overtime pay for the police officers who have to supervise the swarms of people coming in from all over town and contain the drunk and disorderly from time to time. Plus, have I mentioned my dog is pathologically afraid of loud noises? She had so many epic freakouts that she ruined two carpets and we now give her  sedative on the fourth. Therefore, we Mentinks will be content with seeing loved ones and enjoying our lovely American backyard. No fireworks required.

  1. Went to my parents’ house for their annual 4th of July picnic. Had over 60 friends and family attend this year! A tradition started as a thank you years ago for all who helped them build/finish their house! They put in a pool this year so the kids never wanted to go home! My three were so tired we didn’t even try to keep them up for the fireworks! Missed seeing them but would have had “fireworks” of our own with all the grumpy kids if we’d let them stay up!

For the 4th of July I went with my daughter’s family to the little town’s parade where they live…it is a great happening for a tiny town…almost everyone who lives in the town and their dog is either in the parade or viewing it…I love to come visit here just so we can go be a part of this great American tradition…..a July 4th Parade!
