Tolkien’s forbidden love

Poor Tolkien!

After being orphaned and shuffled off to an aunt by marriage and then a woman named Mrs. Faulkner, Ronald’s unremarkable start did not slow him down. He’d already mastered Latin and Greek as well as other languages. More interestingly, he started to make up his own languages, just for fun! While living at Mrs. Faulkner’s, Tolkien (age 16) fell in love with an older woman, Edith Bratt (age 19!) Eventually, he was forbidden by his priest, Father Francis to see or have any contact whatsoever with Edith until he turned 21. He obeyed the order to the letter.

Unrequited love for the orphaned Tolkien. It’s the stuff fine novels are made of. Have you read any of Tolkien’s books or enjoyed movies based on his stories? What was your favorite? Comments get you entered in the November drawing for  a Starbuck’s card and signed book. Winner announced Friday!!!

Sadly, this is not a genre that I am drawn to. However, as you stated, the real life bio of Tolkien is extremely interesting. Thanks for sharing!
