I’m not talking about Dr. Who. No, I’m referring to that amazing Doctor who wrote a book on a bet and created the most beloved stories of all time…Theodor Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss! Twenty years after his death there is BIG news because his wife discovered two complete Seuss manuscripts while she was cleaning out his study. The first entitled “What Pet Should I Get?” will be released by Random House this July. It features the same brother-sister duo that appeared in “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.” Now isn’t that exciting throwback news?

Dr. Seuss remains one of my all-time favorite picture book authors. I loved them as a kid, I loved reading them to my kids, I will love reading them to my grandkids someday. Hard to pick just one favorite. The tongue-twisting Fox in Socks was always a fun challenge.

We liked Horton Hears a Who and Thidwick the Bighearted Moose.
His books were longer than today’s picture books–does that mean that
our generation (we actually read them to our children) was smarter?
Or at least had a longer attention span.

How exciting. I’m torn between “Green Eggs and Ham” and “Mulberry Street.” “Mulberry Street” is a little different from most of his books, but one of the things I most enjoy is the ordinary parts of the story, before the embellishment kicks in, show horses pulling milk wagons down the street.Which just goes to show: kids are kids, whatever generation.

I didn’t grow up with Dr. Seuss because both my mom & brother found him creepy … I learned to love his work at school and at the library. I will look for this book to read with my kids when it comes out … they are like me and love his work ! (BTW, Universal studios in florida has an area that is themed on Dr. Seuss works … the whole family loved it when we were there, for me it was the street of the Lorax that made my day !).

Love that one, too. As I mentioned earlier, my fave is McElligot’s Pool because the little guy has the imagination and optimism to believe in what he doesn’t see, in spite of what everyone tells him.
