Can you hear those sleigh bells jingling when you head to your favorite bookstore? Yep, it’s time for publishers to offer their feast of holiday themed books. Starting last month, bells, wreaths, fruitcakes and other yuletide themes began creeping into our fiction titles. I’ve never written a holiday themed book until now. My newest suspense, Dangerous Tidings, takes place at Christmas time in the southern California resort town of Coronado (and yes, I did enjoy the research for that one!) In the novel, it’s a difficult time for protagonist Donna and her sisters as they deal with the loss of their father. Holidays can be especially difficult for the grieving, can’t they? It was interesting to write a book that takes place at what is supposed to be a time of celebration, but instead is a period of deep struggle.
So what do you think about holiday themed novels? Do you enjoy reading them? Find them too cheesy? Do you read them only during the holiday they represent or any old time? Giving away an Amazon gift card and a signed book on Thursday! Would love to hear your thoughts!
Ice skating….on the beach! Only in a place like Coronado Island.

I love holiday books and will read them anytime of the year. Of course I enjoy them most at Christmas time but it doesn’t matter if I happen to run across them at another time of year. If it’s another type of holiday book (Valentine’s Day, etc.), it’s the same for me – I can read it anytime!

Love them. I have a collection of old favorites I read over and over, like “Winter Solstice” and “A Christmas Carol.” I also pick up a few new ones every year, and Christmas themed short stories and novellas are a nice way to relax between baking and decorating. Yes, I’m a Christmas person.

I actually enjoy them & even keep a basket of Christmas novels. I especially like them when the holiday is worked into what would already be a good story without the holiday.

I don’t love holiday novels, but I do like them and enjoy reading them occasionally. Though I really haven’t read that many (maybe 20?), the time of year doesn’t matter. And sure, some are cheesy, but that’s not always a bad thing. π

Some holiday-themed novels do seem opportunistic and cheesy. But having a “Christmas book” makes for a nice gift, so I’m not going to paint them all with the same brush. But I’m not going to write one, either!
