When your mom’s a fiction writer…

I have a weird job. I make things up for a living. For a long time this was confusing for my children when they would talk to their friends whose mom’s did normal jobs like teaching, accounting, engineering and the like. Now that the bear cubs are teens, they have some interesting insights in what it’s like to have a writer mom. Here’s some thoughts from Yogi, the 17 year old Mentink cub.

1. Best thing about having a mom who is a writer? Hearing all the fun and interesting characters she creates.

2. Worst thing about having a mom who is a writer? Seeing the stack of edits she has to do.

3. Weirdest thing about having a mom who is a writer….when your mom says, “That would be a great place to find a dead body.”

  1. My Mom has rescued many, many cats over the years. She even climbed into a sewer drain once to save a kitten and had her picture in the paper. She paid for a lot of vet bills on rescued strays and paid to spay and neuter them/ My Mom is my hero.

  2. She loves to watch Fashion TV or browse the latest fashion. And she was like “what do you think of this, that.” I groaned, because I’m not that interested in fashion and whatsoever. But she’s awesome when she’s not doing it.

My Mom (at least in my opinion!) is a very talented artist… sadly non of her kids inherited her talents.

My mom was an LPN for over 30 years. She just retired this year ๐Ÿ™‚ She started out working at a hospital then many nursing homes. I think her favorite place was private care for pediatrics (children). She’s met many different families over the years and is a very caring individual. I think she made a compassionate nurse who went above & beyond her job to care for her patients ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. My mother doesn’t and didn’t have a unusual job or hobby. Although my schooling and career choice isn’t unusual, my children’s response to some of my education-induced ramblings are. Or maybe not? I graduated university with a degree in Exercise Science with a minor in nutrition. Needless to say, exercise and nutrition is part of my daily life. I can’t get my daughter to exercise for her life, but my son just discovered weight-training. I get daily body-building poses and questions such as, “Which bicep do you think looks stronger?” As for nutrition, my son declares that “He likes his red 40 and yellow 6 food dye!”

  9. My mom died when I was young. My daughter is a mom – and a speculative fiction novelist. Her children are frequently asked questions like, “give me some alien-sounding names for characters… or towns… or planets… or actions”.
