Who knew? I certainly had no idea that Harper Collins intended to purchase my publisher, Harlequin, until I got a wee little message from my agent. He was surprised too. Amazingly, Harper Collins managed to keep it on the down low, scooping up Harlequin to add to its arsenal. Recently, Harper Collins made another surprising move, acquiring Thomas Nelson and merging it with Zondervan to create their Harper Collins Christian Publishing division. Why purchase Harlequin? Well, aside from the fact that it’s an awesome company which employs more than 1300 authors and produces 110 books each month. The big selling point for H.C. appears to be that 40 % of Harlequin’s revenues come from works published in languages other than English, and H.C. is looking to expand its international footprint.
So what does this mean for me personally?
No idea!!!! As of now, H.C. intends to operate Harlequin as a separate entity under their umbrella and I’m happy to keep writing my little LIS and Heartwarming books. However, I’ve been in this business to know, well, it’s a business and there will be changes, tidying up, examinations of bottoms lines and redundancies and such. My new employer could decide to nix the lines I write for. Or they could expand them. Uncertainty is the name of the game in this biz. For now, I will keep on writing and wait for the coming changes.

My job was eliminated at a banking institution after a major merger was completed. This left my family in shock as I was the main breadwinner and had no clue my department was to be eliminated. After some odd jobs from friends, I grabbed onto this company I’m with now and have been gainfully employed with them for over 9 years now. I do believe I’m better off now then had I stayed with the other company.

I’m glad it worked out for the best, Rick. What a nasty shock, though!

I know it doesn’t help to say what will be will be, but that is the truth. Whatever happens, you’ll find a home for your work. Don’t worry about that!
I also hope they keep it as is or expand. I’ve been targeting the LI and LIS market. Hurry up and wait, I suppose.
Best of luck to us all, huh?

Well, I know the LIS line is very popular, so hopefully it will stick around!

I’m actually in the contest, made it through so far. I worry about my first three chapters. There’s much that needed changing, noted after I sent it in. 🙂 Gah, at least I’ll get feedback either way. Thanks for thinking of me!

Best of luck, Shanda! I always thing of things that could have been changed after I submit. I just tell myself, “That was the best I could do at that time!”

I sure hope they don’t change anything. I’m surprised as you are. I hope Love Inspired books stay as they are.
